Upcoming Events

Hi everyone!  I am going to try to post concerts and recitals ahead of time.  Last year was such a crazy year I didn't make a single post during the school year!

I don't have dates yet for all of my upcoming concerts but will post as I get information.

I will be playing Duo for Flute and Piano, Mvt. I. Flowing, by Aaron Copland.

2014-2015: WHAT A YEAR!!!!!

Well, ever since I started at UNLV last fall, it has been a whirlwind.  I am enjoying my time at UNLV and meeting very many great people!  Here is a little summary of what I have been up to:

Classes & Ensembles

Fall 2015

Nevada Constitution
I came, I saw, I passed.

Geology 101(w/lab), Dr. Melissa Giovanni:
Yes....science....the class I was dreading the most. But it's over now!  I got a B+.  That is like a miracle for me, you have no idea!  Haha.
The instructor's passion for Geology, the Earth, environment, and outdoors made the class that much more interesting.

Marching Band Techniques, Dr. Rick McEnaney
I had to do 12 hours of marching band rehearsal observations, plus attendance of a Marching Band competition and football game.  The class met once a week to discuss techniques and tools needed to have to teach high school marching band (and much more).

The school marching bands I observed were:  Chaparral High School (director Paul Beuning), Foothill High School (director Travis Pardee), and Arbor View High School (director Justin Klarer).  Terrific schools, terrific band instructors, terrific kids.
Check this out!!!!: Foothill High School Marching Band at Macy's Day Parade 2014

I learned a LOT from this class under the instruction of Dr. Rick McEnaney, the Coordinator of Secondary Fine Arts for the Clark County School District here in Las Vegas.  In addition to giving us a wealth of resources to be prepared to teach high school marching band, he even gave us advice and knowledge about how to be smart financially, organizational skills, teaching philosophies and the importance of music education in schools.

Practicum - Middle School Band
I completed my middle school band practicum at Sig Rogich Middle School, with Aaron Robinson, the band director their, as my mentor.

Concert Attendance:
Attend 10 small ensemble/solo performances. Man was it hard to find the time to attend all those concerts....

Flute Lessons and Woodwind Repertory Class. Dr. Jennifer Grim

Dr. Grim is absolutely amazing, and I have been learning a lot!  This semester, some of the repertoire I studied and performed are:

Partita in A minor, J.S. Bach

Sicillienne et berlesque, Op. 23, Casella

I had several performance opportunities this semester, including:

-Studio flute recital, in which I performed the Casella
-Juries
-Mock Orchestral Auditions:  All of the woodwind players participated, and were ranked.  I was the winner of the flutist audition!
-Ensemble concerts (below)

Women's Chorus, Dr. Jocelyn K. Jensen

I enjoyed singing in Women's Chorus under the direction of Dr. Jensen.  She is a wonderful choir director, and being in this group made me realize how much I miss singing in a choir!

Community Band, Professor Anthony LaBounty
This is a fun group, it is a community band that I am playing with to fulfill my requirements for my scholarship.

Wind Orchestra, Professor Thomas G. Leslie

Wow, the musicality in this group is amazing!  I am having a blast playing piccolo in this group.

American Heroes Concert

This was a very special concert dedicated to veterans of the United States Military.  Not only did we honor our veterans with this concert, but three veterans who fought in WWII attended and were presented with the French Legion of Honor (Chevalier) Aware at this concert.  Afterward, the three heroes stayed after and signed autographs.  What amazing men these were.

We also had a few guest conductors, listed below, a couple of them composed and arranged the pieces they conducted.  One was a former conductor of "The President's Own" Marine Band.

I was able to wear my uniform at this concert, and perform the piccolo solo for Stars and Stripes at the end.  I felt like I was playing with the Army Band...it was sort of a link between two worlds for me, which made it really exciting.

Music:
The Star Spangled Banner by John Stafford Smith (conductor, Professor Thomas Leslie)

American Hero by Bruce Broughton (guest conductor, Bruce Broughton)

American Suite (Movements I&V) by Antonin Dvorak, arr. by Johan de Maij (guest conductor, Johan da Maij)

Incidental Music from the Motion Picture:  LINCOLN by John Williams (conductor, Dr. Zane Douglass, guest narrator, Clarence Gilyard)

Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland, arr. by Walter Beeler (conductor, Professor Leslie, guest narrator, Jeffrey Koep, Ph.D.)

God of Our Fathers by George Warren, arr. by Thomas Knox (conductor, Professor Leslie)

Tribute to Stephen Foster Arr. by Sammy Nestico (guest conductor, Col. John R. Bourgeois, USMC (Ret.) Conductor Director Emeritus, U.S. Marine Band, "The President's Own")

Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa, edited by Col. John R. Bourgeois (guest conductor, Col. John R. Bourgeois)

Spring 2015

Educational Psychology, Professor Ivan Ivanov
I enjoyed this class very much.  I think if I wasn't a music major, I would be a psychology major.  It is a fascinating subject to me, and what I learned in this class will be an important resource for me later on when I begin teaching.

Concert Attendance
10 Convocations.  Fun.

Advanced Musicianship, Dr. Diego Vega
I am FINALLY done with Music Theory!  We learned about 20th century techniques in this class, as much as we were able to cover in the short time there was.  I enjoyed it, but I'm glad it's over!

Choral Practicum, Basic High School, Mr. Ryan Duff
Mr. Ryan Duff was my mentor teacher this semester.  He was an awesome choir director.  One of the highlights was that he has a tradition with his Chamber Choir (Madrigals), where he composes or arranges a pieces for their choir alone, and will be the only choir ever to perform it.  I was there when he passed out the piece to them, his arrangement of "You are Not Alone."

The Healthy Musician, Dr. Stephen Caplan
This was a very illuminating class, teaching us body mapping techniques and a lot of misconceptions musicians (and just anybody) have about their anatomy.

Women's Chorus. Dr. Jocelyn K. Jensen
Again, love this choir!

Community Concert Band, Professor Anthony LaBounty

Flute Lessons, Dr. Jennifer Grim
Here is the repertoire I studied this semester:

Grand Polonaise Op. 16 by Theobold Boehm

Sonatine for Flute and Piano by Henri Dutilleux

Piccolo Concerto in D Major, RV 443 by Antonio Vivaldi

Lachrymose (for piccolo alone), by Derek Charke

Wind Orchestra, Professor Thomas G. Leslie
Concerts:

February 26th, 2015
Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall
Performing Arts Center
University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Rocky Point Holiday by Ron Nelson

Gone by Scott McAllister

"March Militaire Francaise" from Suite Algerienne by Camille Saint-Saens, trans. by Mark Hindsley

Asphalt Cocktail by John Mackey

Belkis, Regina di Saba by Ottorino Respighi, trans. by Yoshihiro Kimura

April 23rd, 2015
Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall
Performing Arts Center
University of Nevada, Las Vegas

I couldn't find the program for this concert, so I don't have all of the information (arrangers, etc.).   We performed movie music, so it was a fun one. This is what we performed:

Sea Hawk by Erich Wolfgang Korngold

At the Movies by Philip Sousa

Star Wars by John Williams

Cowboys by John Williams

Riften Wed by Julie Giroux

Ben-Hur by Miklos Rozsa

Did I say "little summary"?  Oops.  Hopefully next time I can split it up more!  I will try to post announcements of upcoming concerts and recitals in the future.

Back in the Army Band AND Scholarship at UNLV-- WHAT?!

It has been quite a while since I have posted a new blog.  I have been in sort of a dead zone (actually, I was in a dead zone, except for the last few months, in which I have been very busy).  For a while, things just did not seem to be lining up for me the way I had hoped. I've been spending a lot of time deciding what direction I want to take my life at this point.  Transfer credits to UNLV were taking a while to get figured out, I couldn't decide where, how, and if I was going to finish school.  I spent a lot of time exploring my options, and prayed I would make the right decision.

Then, this last spring, I decided to play with the Flute Choir at UNLV.  I thought to myself, "I need to get involved with performing music again somehow," and figured that joining the Flute Choir would be a good way to get my feet wet.

I enjoyed playing in the Flute Choir, I met some great people and got to know the UNLV Flute Professor, Dr. Jennifer Grim.  Not only did my feet get wet, but I was presented with an opportunity to receive a scholarship to play piccolo in the UNLV Wind Orchestra.  I have been granted the scholarship, which will cover virtually all of my tuition.  UNLV, here I come!

And as if that is not enough AWESOMENESS, another amazing opportunity presented itself to me!  I have missed being in the Army Band so much for the past 4+ years, and it seemed hopeless I would ever be a part of a band again any time soon.  When I moved to Las Vegas last year, I was preparing to transfer into a unit doing my secondary MOS - Automated Logistics Specialist - which I wasn't too excited about, until I talked to an Army Career Counselor who told me about an open slot in a Army Reserve Band that would be a 4 hour commute.  I called that unit, and now I am once again a part of the 300th Army Band in Bell, CA (near Los Angeles).  Yes, I must commute once a month.  But it's worth it!  I am so happy to be doing what I love in the military once again.  And to top it all off, I went to Hawai'i for Annual Training with the Band in July for 2 weeks.  As if being in the Band again isn't enough!  The trip was amazing!!!!!!!

The Lord has answered my prayers, and I am so grateful.  I was at a very low point before all of this happened, but I think that made me appreciate these blessings even more.

Collaboration Website!

I have recently joined a pretty cool website I want to tell you all about.

http://www.kompoz.com

It is a music collaboration site.  You upload your projects onto the site, and anyone from anywhere can add to it with their own tracks.  It's great!

Check out my first project:
http://www.kompoz.com/compose-collaborate/home.project?projectId=43621

I came up with an idea, and people are submitting to it, though I still need to add some more of my own stuff and kind of decide what direction I want to take it.  It's really fun hearing different ideas on what to do, I am enjoying it!

And here is a project I collaborated on:
http://www.kompoz.com/compose-collaborate/home.track.project?trackId=294797

I love this one!  You just gotta hear it! :-)

I would like to invite anyone and everyone to collaborate with me on this website!

Mixing Madness!

I have been having fun doing some recording and mixing!  I am very inexperienced and am just trying it out and seeing where I decide to go with it.
Here are some samples of what I have been working on so far.  I am sharing them via soundcloud because that is the simplest way I could figure out to do it.  Click the links to hear the tracks!

The first masterpiece (not really, lol) is titled, "Huh? Oh!"  It is based on a silly chant my sister and I came up with years ago to go along with a silly made up rap.  This is a family "rap" (not sure what else to call it, lol).

1.  "Huh? Oh!"

https://soundcloud.com/melanie-shumway-addington/huh-oh

Performers:

Erica Waltz (my Sister) =  "Huh? Oh!"

Me =  "What? I said, what?"/ Talking at the end

Suzanne Havens (my Mom) =  "Hey, Come On!"

Eric (My 6 year old son) =  Humming / "What? I said what?" later on in the song

The recording could have gone better, and this is my first attempt at mixing, so I am sure it could be improved.  Unfortunately I made a few mistakes that I would have to go back and re-record to fix, which is difficult because we all live in 3 different states!  Also, I am new to Garageband and not everything worked out exactly how I wanted.
But, I still think it's fun!!!

2.  Blues Flute - Sample

https://soundcloud.com/melanie-shumway-addington/blues-flute-sample

This next recording is a sample of a mix I am working on in Garageband.  It is not yet finished.  It is all me on my flute, along with a drum loop from the Garageband loop library.  I will eventually come up with a more original title, haha.  I hope you enjoy it!

3.  Women of Ireland - Sample

https://soundcloud.com/melanie-shumway-addington/women-of-ireland-sample

This is again all me on the flute.  I am using the James Galway arrangement of this Irish classic, and adapting it for flutes alone (for now. I may change my mind later on).  It is just a sample.  I love this piece, it is such a gorgeous melody.

I just wanted to give you all an idea of what I am up to!  There is more to come :-)

It Starts!

I finally got the very basics for my home recording studio!  I bought the Focusrite Scarlett Studio, which contains the Scarlet 2i2 USB audio interface, studio headphones, a mic, and connectors.  It also includes Cubase LE6 (recording/mixing software).

This is a very affordable way to get started recording, and works for both Mac and Windows.  Working at Guitar Center, I was able to get some great advice from coworkers with extensive knowledge in this type of stuff.  And, my employee discount made it even better!

This system is fabulous--through the interface I can record in real time with the music on my computer, there is no delay.  The mic has a nice, crisp and clear sound.  I played around with it today some, and I can't wait to explore more and find all the things I will be able to do!

I haven't started using Cubase yet, though it looks like a great program.  I was just too excited to start recording--it took a couple hours for me to figure out how to install all of the drivers, register the product and software, etc....and by the time I finished I just decided to start using GarageBand.  Eventually I will use it and will report my findings!

Watch out world, flute player Melanie has her own recording/mixing studio!

As soon as I finish creating my first "mix" I will post it.  Until then, ciao!

New Job!

Due to personal circumstances, I have decided to take a break from school.  I don't know how long my  break is going to be, I guess it depends on how some other things in my life go.

In the meantime I am focusing on some new and different things, and I am excited!

I have gotten a part time job at Guitar Center!  I am working as a Customer Operations Associate.  I am a flute player, so why would I be excited about a job at Guitar Center?  I will tell you why!

It has been a lifelong dream of mine to have my own home recording studio.  10-15 years ago this seemed like nearly an impossible task, because of expenses involved, large mixing equipment needed, and lack of experience and knowledge.  Well, ladies and gentlemen, times have changed.  We are in the 21st century, and not only is equipment becoming more portable and affordable, but there is a wealth of knowledge online and in books, and affordable training programs.  Once I got this job at Guitar Center, I finally decided I think it's about time I make my dream a reality!

Guitar Center sells more than guitars.  They also sell electric pianos and keyboards, drums, DJ equipment, sheet music, and top of the line pro audio equipment.

I started this job about 3 weeks ago, and am very excited to be working with musicians and recording artists who have a wealth of knowledge in their fields.  Guitar Center hires employees with extensive experience for their individual departments.  Every day I go to work I am trying to learn a little more, and it is going a long way.

I finally have a good idea of the type of equipment I need for my desired purposes.  I still need to do some more research and learn a little bit more, and once I know exactly what equipment I need I am going to make a budget, and do it!  My goal is to get the best possible equipment for the price, and not to buy the cheapest equipment and software just to find out I need to upgrade later.  So, I am in no rush, I am simply taking in all the knowledge I can so I can make an informed decision when the time comes.
